The changes are part of the government’s “new economy” plan that also calls for a more modern approach to the nation’s electric vehicle (EV) fleet.
Electromotive systems, which include buses and trucks, have been in use for years, but the government has struggled to find enough battery-based power sources.
It has also been struggling to make EVs more fuel efficient, as they have become more complex.
“This will be a very significant change in how we drive our vehicles and make them more energy efficient,” said Transportation Minister Denis Lebel.
Westinghouse will now be able to produce up to 80% more power than a traditional battery-powered system, with more than 2,000 electric buses on the road and over 100,000 EVs on the way.
Transportation Minister Denis Derevencio-Boulet said the government is looking to electrify every bus in Canada by 2022, and the goal is to have as many as 80% of all new buses in the country powered by electricity by 2026.
In addition, the ministry is looking at ways to bring more EVs to market, including more flexible fuel economy and lower operating costs, it said.
Buses are already electrified, with a hybrid system on some buses and on some trucks.
There are currently more than 30,000 electrified vehicles in Canada with 1.4 million vehicles on the roads, with 1,200 of those on the highway, according to Transport Canada.
According to the government, the number of EVs on Canadian roads is expected to rise from 7,500 today to nearly 25,000 by 2031.
New buses will also get new batteries that are much more powerful, meaning they are designed to take up less space and be more efficient.
To ensure that the new electric vehicles are safer and more fuel-efficient, the new battery packs will also have “supercharged” technology, which will boost the capacity of the battery pack to 300 kilowatts.
Derevencso-Boulanger said the new batteries will be available in 2019, and a new technology called “supercapacitors” will be introduced in 2020 to increase capacity.
Emissions will also be reduced by as much as 50%, meaning vehicles will get 30% less carbon dioxide, the emissions-compensating emissions that are not considered harmful to the environment.
As part of its new energy plan, the Trudeau government also plans to introduce a national “clean fuel tax” for vehicles that emit more than 1.5 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre.
Canada is expected in 2021 to reach a new goal of 100% renewable energy, according the government.
This is expected not to be achieved until 2030, but Derevincio Boulet said Canada is working towards it.
Last month, Trudeau announced the new plan to make electric vehicles a more sustainable and attractive option, with all vehicles going electric by 2025.
